In One Hundred and One, I explore the weight of grief and the power of solidarity in the face of loss. The eye painted on the back of the hand is a direct reference to Picasso’s Weeping Woman, a symbol of sorrow, reinterpreted here as a mark of resilience and remembrance. This eye also nods to the Hamsa Hand—an ancient emblem of protection, strength, and defiance—offering a sense of guardianship and empowerment amid tragedy.
The inverted figure reflects the disorientation of a world where violence against women continues unchecked, an unsettling reminder of the one hundred and one women murdered in Australia last year. In this state of upheaval, where reality feels surreal and inverted, the act of witnessing and remembering becomes an assertion of presence, of resistance, and of the collective weight of mourning.
Through this work, I seek to honour their lives and stand in solidarity with those left to navigate the aftermath—bearing witness to both the devastation and the enduring strength found within grief.
